WASHINGTON – U.S. First Lady Melania Trump has successfully secured a localized ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine in the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky, set to begin on October 29, the White House announced on Friday, according to LBC. The agreement aims to halt military action temporarily in the blockaded southern Ukrainian town to permit humanitarian aid and facilitate civilian evacuations.

According to the Baltimore Sun, the first lady initiated the discussions and worked directly alongside a representative with both Russian and Ukrainian leadership to define the terms of the truce. The White House stated that non-military teams from both nations will visit residents in their homes and coordinate transportation for those wishing to evacuate to either Russia or Ukraine.

Humanitarian Crisis in Oleshky

Oleshky, located across the Dnipro River from Kherson, has been under Russian occupation since February 2022. The city has seen its population plummet from roughly 24,000 before the war down to between 1,700 and 2,000 residents, primarily elderly individuals alongside about 50 children, as reported by NBC News.

Living conditions in the front-line city have deteriorated severely. The White House noted that approximately 90% of the city was flooded following the destruction of the Kakhovka Dam in June 2023. Residents have faced months of severe shortages regarding food, clean water, heat, and electricity, while roads leading out of town are heavily mined and surrounded by burned-out infrastructure.

Evacuation Logistics and Documentation

Under the terms arranged by the first lady, the upcoming window will allow teams to coordinate transport for remaining civilians. Melania Trump stated that residents will receive coordinated support to reach their preferred destination, noting that some may choose to travel to Russia while others head toward Ukrainian-controlled territory.

An American media organization is slated to accompany the teams to document the process. Newsmax reported that its cameras would be granted exclusive access to record the humanitarian effort. Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials have previously detailed extreme difficulties in delivering relief, with regional military administration reports highlighting severe risks for anyone attempting to supply the isolated population.

As the October 29 start date approaches, international observers and humanitarian organizations will monitor whether the localized agreement holds and successfully delivers much-needed medical supplies and evacuation pathways to the trapped residents.
