Quick Read

  • U.S. UN Ambassador Mike Waltz stated the Iran war could persist for another year.
  • Brent crude oil prices reached 6 a barrel amid Strait of Hormuz shipping disruptions.
  • Saudi Arabia tripled its East-West pipeline throughput to 7 million barrels daily to bypass maritime risks.
  • UAE authorities launched cleanup operations after an oil spill linked to the tanker Gem No. 2.

The ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran could persist for another year, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz warned in remarks reported by CBS News. Speaking to the Financial Times, the Trump administration envoy indicated that while the administration hopes Tehran will come to the negotiating table sooner, military and economic pressures in the region remain acute.

The timeline projection coincides with a sharp escalation in global energy markets. Brent crude oil reached $116 a barrel after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed responsibility for disabling seven commercial tankers near the Strait of Hormuz. President Trump dismissed Tehran’s announcements as fabrications designed to manipulate energy markets ahead of the upcoming U.S. midterm elections.

Strait of Hormuz Disruptions and Alternative Routes

Iranian state television claimed that all movement of non-compliant vessels through the vital Strait of Hormuz had been halted following recent naval strikes and navigational system disruptions. Tehran has consistently demanded that commercial shipping utilize a northern route near its coastline, while Washington encourages operators to navigate a southern corridor near Oman to circumvent Iranian tolls.

Amid mounting transit risks, Saudi Arabia reported that throughput on its East-West pipeline more than tripled from 2 million to 7 million barrels per day. The bypass pipeline allows state-owned energy giant Saudi Aramco to maintain export flows despite severe maritime uncertainties in the Persian Gulf.

Environmental Impact and Regional Reactions

Meanwhile, authorities in the United Arab Emirates addressed a significant maritime environmental incident off the northern coast. Maritime analysts identified the vessel involved in an oil spill near Umm Al Quwain as the Panama-flagged tanker Gem No. 2, which was struck by an unidentified projectile on October 9. UAE environmental officials confirmed that cleanup operations are underway and local beaches have been temporarily closed.

International diplomats have expressed grave concern over the widening economic and geopolitical fallout. Speaking in Istanbul after consultations with regional counterparts, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot warned that any further escalation between Washington and Tehran would leave no winners and severely impact global hydrocarbon markets.
