WASHINGTON – United States Senator Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) has sent a formal letter to Anthropic Chief Executive Officer Dario Amodei, challenging what he described as a contradictory approach to artificial intelligence development as the company prepares for a historic public offering, according to a press release issued on Monday, October 5, 2026, by the Senator Bernie Moreno Press Office.

In the letter, Senator Moreno criticized company leadership for issuing severe warnings about potential existential threats while simultaneously inviting ordinary Americans to invest their personal savings into the firm’s commercial growth through an upcoming initial public offering expected as early as October 2026.

Financial Stakes and Valuation Concerns

The legislative scrutiny arrives as market participants discuss a corporate valuation approaching $2 trillion for Anthropic, a figure representing roughly 42 times its current revenue and double its estimated worth from four months prior. Moreno noted that while broadening public access to financial markets can benefit workers, inviting millions of citizens to tie their financial futures to the company creates a direct tension with public statements regarding extreme technological hazards.

“While I applaud any company that gives hardworking Americans access to its success, I do not understand how you can ask them to invest their hard-earned savings in Anthropic’s continued development while warning those same Americans that your product could ultimately lead to their extinction,” Moreno wrote in the correspondence.

Internal Safety Debates and Public Statements

The congressional intervention follows a series of high-profile departures and internal debates regarding advanced artificial intelligence safety. Researcher Jacob Coxon recently resigned from Anthropic and publicly accused both Anthropic and competitor OpenAI of taking excessive risks with public safety. Evan Hubinger, a top safety expert at Anthropic, subsequently supported those statements on social media, estimating a greater than 10 percent probability of catastrophic outcomes within the decade.

CEO Dario Amodei later stated during a CNN appearance that he agreed with much of Coxon’s perspective, having previously acknowledged a significant statistical chance that further development of super intelligence systems could unfold severely. Moreno argued that such commentary promotes alarmism without offering concrete guidance on how the technology can be harnessed defensively.

National Security and Domestic Priorities

Beyond market valuations, the correspondence emphasizes the strategic necessity of maintaining American technological leadership against international competitors such as China. Moreno urged company executives to align with the White House Accord on Super Intelligence, shifting public discourse away from worst-case existential scenarios and toward practical solutions for securing critical infrastructure and countering adversary threats.
