Former Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has been photographed in Notting Hill, London, marking the end of the first week of imprisonment for her husband, Peter Murrell. Murrell, the former chief executive of the Scottish National Party (SNP), is currently serving a five-year and three-month sentence following his conviction for embezzling over £400,000 from the party.
According to proceedings at the High Court in Edinburgh on June 23, Murrell misappropriated funds between 2010 and 2022. The court heard that the embezzled money was used to purchase a £124,550 motorhome, luxury jewellery, high-end homewares, and designer stationery. Murrell further admitted to falsifying accounting records and creating fraudulent invoices to conceal his activities during his tenure as the party’s top official.
Ms. Sturgeon, who served as First Minister from 2014 to 2023, has maintained distance from the criminal proceedings. In a recent interview with the BBC, she stated, “I am not responsible for the crimes that my former husband committed and I’m not going to apologise for somebody else’s crimes.” She has previously asserted that she was “completely cleared and exonerated” by police investigations and has maintained that Murrell deceived her regarding the party’s financial status.
The sentencing of a figure as prominent as Murrell, who led the SNP’s administrative operations for over two decades, continues to cast a shadow over the party’s legacy and its long-standing advocacy for Scottish independence.
