The Phoenix Mercury snapped a four-game losing streak on Saturday night, delivering a decisive 101-69 victory against the Toronto Tempo at the Mortgage Matchup Center. The win marked the Mercury’s second-highest margin of victory this season, trailing only their 99-66 season-opener against the Las Vegas Aces.
Phoenix controlled the game from the opening tip, establishing a 21-8 lead early in the first quarter. By halftime, the Mercury held a 58-35 advantage, and they continued to pull away with a 30-point third quarter to enter the final frame leading 88-49.
Balanced Offense and Playmaking
The Mercury showcased a deep offensive rotation with six players reaching double digits. Noemie Brochart and Shay Ciezki led the scoring efforts with 15 points each. Additional contributions came from Sami Whitcomb (14 points), Marta Suarez (13 points), Maddy Westbeld (12 points), and Lexi Held (11 points).
Alyssa Thomas played a pivotal role in the team’s efficiency, distributing 12 assists throughout the contest. This performance marked the 11th time this season that Thomas has recorded 10 or more assists in a single game, highlighting her role as the primary playmaker for the Phoenix squad.
Tempo’s Struggles Continue
For the Toronto Tempo (11-29), the loss follows a 93-73 defeat to the Las Vegas Aces on Friday night. The team continues to navigate the absence of leading scorer Marina Mabrey, who is averaging 20.8 points per game but has missed the last six contests due to an adductor injury.
Despite the lopsided score, Isabelle Harrison provided a bright spot for Toronto, recording 16 points and 10 rebounds. Teammates Kiki Rice and Laura Juskaite added 14 and 10 points, respectively, but the team could not overcome the early deficit created by Phoenix’s aggressive start.
