A new, pocket-sized heart defibrillator has been introduced to the market, aimed at significantly improving survival rates for cardiac arrest victims through rapid bystander intervention. The device is specifically engineered for use by individuals without formal medical training, simplifying the process of emergency cardiac care.

According to St John volunteer paramedic Antonia Lao, who spoke to 6PR Breakfast, the device is designed to eliminate the hesitation often associated with emergency medical response. The unit features integrated audio instructions that guide the user step-by-step through the process. Additionally, it includes a built-in metronome to assist with the correct rhythm for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and clear visual diagrams illustrating the proper placement of pads.

The portability of this defibrillator marks a shift from traditional, larger automated external defibrillators (AEDs) typically found in public spaces. By making the technology more accessible and easier to operate, health advocates hope to increase the frequency of life-saving interventions before emergency services arrive on the scene.
