Legal Action Initiated

Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, wife of former Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, has filed a defamation lawsuit against renowned comedian and actor Harith Iskander. The legal proceedings, filed at the Kuala Lumpur High Court on June 9, stem from a stand-up comedy performance titled “Harith Iskander: The Outspoken Comedy Tour,” held in Melaka on January 17, 2026.

According to the statement of claim, Rosmah alleges that Iskander subjected her to “body-shaming” and defamatory remarks. The suit contends that during the performance, Iskander displayed images of mythical supernatural creatures from Malaysian folklore before showing a photograph of the plaintiff to the audience. The comedian allegedly suggested that the plaintiff was a frightening figure, capable of causing public fear and ridicule.

Defense Arguments

In his statement of defense filed on July 9, Harith Iskander denied the allegations of defamation and malicious intent. His legal team, led by Sangeet Kaur Deo, argues that the performance did not portray Rosmah as a supernatural or repulsive entity. The defense emphasizes that the image in question was displayed for less than five seconds during a 90-minute show, arguing that it was a momentary visual aid rather than the focus of the performance.

Iskander further contends that the TikTok videos cited in the lawsuit, which gained significant traction online, were uploaded without his consent and stripped the joke of its original context. He also noted that house rules and disclaimers were clearly broadcast before the show began.

Stakes and Next Steps

Rosmah is seeking general, aggravated, and exemplary damages, alongside a permanent injunction to prevent further publication of the alleged defamatory content. She has also demanded a formal written apology and a retraction to be published in mainstream media and on approved social platforms.

The case represents a significant intersection between high-profile political figures and the limits of artistic expression in Malaysia. Legal counsel for both parties confirmed that the next case management session is scheduled for July 31, 2026.
