Qualification Window Narrowing
Irish sprinter Rhasidat Adeleke has officially withdrawn from the Herculis Diamond League meeting in Monaco, scheduled for this Friday. The decision follows a challenging performance in Eugene, Oregon, last weekend, where the 23-year-old finished ninth in the 400m race with a time of 52.26 seconds.
This withdrawal represents a significant setback for the Dubliner, who is currently scrambling to secure qualification for the upcoming European Championships in Birmingham. With the qualification window set to close on July 26—the final day of the Irish national championships—Adeleke has yet to meet the required standards: 51.20 seconds for the 400m or 22.85 seconds for the 200m.
Form and Recovery Concerns
The Eugene race marked Adeleke’s first competitive 400m outing in 12 months. After a strong start, she faded significantly during the final stretch, recording her slowest 400m time since 2022. Following the event, Adeleke took to social media to address the performance, describing the race as “beyond rough” and emphasizing the challenges of returning to competition after a period marked by recurring injuries, including hamstring, groin, and knee issues that impacted her 2025 season.
Adeleke, who previously won silver at the 2024 European Championships in Rome and finished fourth at the Paris Olympics, has been working with coach Edrick Floreal in Austin, Texas. Her team has opted to replace her in the Monaco line-up with Dutch athlete Lieke Klaver, as the athlete focuses on recovery and finding her form before the rapidly approaching national deadline.
