Caglianone Joins Derby Field
Kansas City Royals right fielder Jac Caglianone has officially committed to the 2026 Home Run Derby, as announced via MLB Network on July 8, 2026. The 23-year-old outfielder is the third participant confirmed for the event, which is scheduled to take place at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia on July 13.
Caglianone enters the competition during a breakout season, having recorded 14 home runs across 85 games. His selection marks the first time a Royals player has competed in the Derby since Bobby Witt Jr. reached the final round in 2024. The event will be broadcast on Netflix, representing a new digital approach to the traditional All-Star festivities.
Analysis: Power Metrics and Developmental Trajectory
The decision to include Caglianone highlights a strategic shift toward showcasing emerging power hitters with elite exit velocity. According to league data, Caglianone’s average exit velocity of 93.7 mph places him in the 96th percentile, while his bat speed of 77.2 mph ranks in the 97th percentile. These metrics suggest that while Caglianone remains an underdog compared to established veterans, his raw physical tools are among the highest in the league.
The timing of his participation aligns with a significant resurgence in his offensive production. After a slower start to his first full season, Caglianone logged a 148 wRC+ over his last 30 games, a sharp improvement from his 89 wRC+ in his first 54 appearances. His performance in June, during which he hit nine of his 14 home runs, served as the primary catalyst for his Derby invitation. For the Royals, this participation serves as a high-visibility platform to showcase the team’s youth-led offensive development, continuing a legacy that includes former participants such as Bo Jackson and Salvador Perez.
