The Ruthin School in Denbighshire, north Wales—an institution with roots dating back to 1284—has been listed for sale with a guide price of £5 million. The listing, managed by surveyor Sanderson Weatherall on behalf of joint administrators at FRP Advisory, follows the school’s sudden closure on the final day of the summer term in July 2026.
The campus spans a significant estate, featuring a Grade II listed main building from the 1850s, 12 interconnected structures, and extensive facilities including a science block, a sports hall, and a 30-bed boarding house in the town centre. Beyond the academic infrastructure, the sale includes over 24 acres of agricultural land and sports pitches, which the estate agent describes as a “rare opportunity” for potential buyers to either maintain the site’s educational legacy or pursue alternative development.
Financial pressures and ownership context
The closure of the 201-pupil co-educational boarding school marks a significant loss for the local Denbighshire community. Ruthin, which was refounded in 1574 by Gabriel Goodman, the Dean of Westminster, had long served as a prominent employer in the region. The sudden cessation of operations has left local officials, including deputy mayor Anne Roberts, expressing concern over the economic impact on the town.
The school had been under the ownership of Galaxy Global Education, a Chinese company that acquired the institution in 2023. This is not the first instance of a closure involving this ownership group; the company also shuttered a private school in Worcestershire earlier this year. The financial pressures leading to the collapse have effectively ended the tenure of a school known for its long history and notable alumni, including Julian Lennon, son of John Lennon, who attended in the 1980s.

With annual fees at the school ranging from approximately £15,800 for day pupils to £54,800 for full boarders, the institution operated in a competitive and high-cost market.
