Former Port Adelaide and Hawthorn defender Ryan Burton is set to join the Greater Western Sydney (GWS) Giants as a development coach for the 2027 AFL season, as reported by the GIANTS. The 29-year-old makes the transition into professional coaching following a 162-game AFL career that concluded last year, after which he spent the 2026 season playing with the Southport Sharks in the Victorian Football League (VFL).
Burton’s professional journey began when he was selected by Hawthorn with pick No. 19 in the 2015 national draft, playing 47 games for the Hawks before moving to Port Adelaide in a 2019 trade involving Chad Wingard. He subsequently played 115 games over seven seasons for the Power. According to AFL, Burton will relocate from the Gold Coast to Sydney next month to prepare the club’s young list for the upcoming pre-season.
Commenting on his transition into the coaching ranks, Burton expressed enthusiasm about beginning this new phase of his career. Having experienced senior football environments across multiple clubs, he noted his eagerness to work within a robust football program alongside established coaches and emerging players.
Coaching Panel Overhaul and Key Additions
Burton’s appointment represents the second major addition to head coach Adam Kingsley’s panel during the off-season. The Giants previously secured Peel Thunder premiership coach Adam Read as an assistant coach, bringing in an individual with 19 years of experience at Fremantle across recruitment and development roles.
Meanwhile, the club’s coaching structure is undergoing significant adjustments. Ben Hart has accepted a position at Collingwood under Craig McRae, while Brett Montgomery is returning to South Australia to coach South Adelaide in the SANFL. Additionally, Craig Jennings has been promoted from midfield and stoppages coach to head of development, where he will collaborate closely with players and coaches.
Club Leadership Perspective and Future Planning
GWS Executive General Manager of Football Jason McCartney highlighted Burton’s extensive experience across two AFL clubs as a vital asset for the team’s younger players. McCartney noted that Burton’s background and interpersonal skills are expected to accelerate player growth as the squad readies itself for competitive fixtures in 2027.
In tandem with these coaching announcements, the club also approached three-time premiership player Dion Prestia regarding a development role following the conclusion of his tenure at Richmond in August. However, Prestia remains keen to continue his playing career elsewhere.
