Tim O’Neal, Vijay Singh and Freddie Jacobson finished the second round of the SAS Championship on October 17 tied at six under par. Their 138 totals left the tournament closely contested after a difficult Saturday at Prestonwood Country Club in Cary, North Carolina.
Saturday’s swing in fortunes
The PGA Tour’s second-round report described wet and windy conditions and a field scoring average of 74.159. These are the standings after 36 holes, rather than a report of the championship’s final result.
Retief Goosen’s rounds illustrated the change in conditions and fortunes. After an opening 65, he shot 79 without a birdie on Saturday and fell into a tie for 29th. Y.E. Yang moved in the opposite direction with a second-round 65, also reaching that tie.
Different routes into contention
O’Neal was pursuing a second PGA Tour Champions victory, Singh a sixth and Jacobson his first. Their shared position after two rounds brought together three different career situations without establishing any of them as the eventual winner.
Why the result matters beyond this event
The tournament also carried regular-season points implications for the Charles Schwab Cup Playoffs and the Sprint to St. Louis. Those projections depended on the completed final round; Saturday’s positions were provisional. The official tournament dates were October 16–18. Final scores and playoff qualification should be checked against the official leaderboard.
