From Exhibition Concept to Production Reality
Seiko is transforming its viral 2024 design concept into a commercial release, launching two limited-edition wristwatches inspired by giant pandas. Originally showcased by Fratello Watches, designer Kiyotaka Sakai’s quirky creation debuted at the brand’s Incredibly Specialized Watch Exhibition as part of the Power Design Project. The concept drew widespread attention for its literal interpretation of the popular panda-dial chronograph aesthetic, combining traditional watchmaking with distinct ursine features.
Following public demand, the Japanese watchmaker decided to bring the concept into production with minimal alterations. Buyers will be able to choose between the classic white-and-black model, designated reference HHK001, and a kawaii pink-and-black version, designated reference HHK002, which takes its coloring cues from newborn pandas. While the playful “Pandagraph” monicker has been quietly dropped from the official dials and press materials, the underlying aesthetic remains intact.
Distinctive Dimensions and Bullhead Layout
Despite its cute inspiration, the timepiece occupies substantial wrist presence. According to reporting by Fratello Watches, the brushed and polished stainless steel cushion-shaped case measures 43mm in diameter with a 14.6mm profile. Wearability is aided by a compact 44.1mm lug-to-lug distance, as the strap attaches almost directly to the case structure. The watch utilizes a bullhead layout, positioning the crown and chronograph pushers on top of the case rather than the traditional side profile. The upper pushers are specifically shaped to resemble little panda ears, mirroring the ears of the animal head design.
Beneath the Hardlex crystal lies the textured panda-fur-patterned dial, framed by two panda-eye-shaped sub-dials. The dial features a specialized two-layered scale called the Sasameter—named after sasa, the Japanese word for bamboo grass—which allows wearers to calculate a panda’s estimated running speed of up to 30 km/h. Protecting the internal components is an all-steel case back styled to resemble the rear of a panda, complete with a small tail engraving, limited-edition numbering, and basic water-resistance indicators.
Movement Specs and Availability
Powering the watch is Seiko’s 8T61 mecha-quartz movement. The caliber offers an accuracy of ±15 seconds per month and an estimated three-year battery life, depending heavily on how frequently the chronograph function is engaged. The movement also provides magnetic resistance up to 4,800 A/m. Each version comes fitted with a leather strap featuring a suede-like finish on the tip and first keeper, stepping back slightly from the extremely furry keepers featured on the initial 2024 concept.
Both references are strictly limited editions. Seiko will produce 3,000 pieces of the white-and-black HHK001 and 2,000 pieces of the pink-and-black HHK002. Each watch carries a retail price of €590, US$540, or £510, with global availability slated to begin in November through official retail channels.
