Investigation into Deliberate Blaze
A 46-year-old woman has been arrested following a fire at a Housing and Development Board (HDB) flat in Sembawang on June 30. The Singapore Police Force confirmed the arrest on July 1, charging the suspect with mischief by fire. Preliminary investigations by the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) suggest the blaze, which occurred at Block 512 Wellington Circle, was deliberately set.
Incident Details
Emergency responders were alerted to the fire at approximately 5:15 pm on June 30. Firefighters from the SCDF arrived at the 10th-floor unit and successfully extinguished the flames using a water jet. The fire was primarily contained within the bedroom of the residence. The 46-year-old woman was found at the scene and subsequently transported to Singapore General Hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.
Rising Residential Fire Concerns
The incident at Wellington Circle occurs against the backdrop of an upward trend in residential fire cases in Singapore. According to SCDF annual statistics released in February, residential fires rose by 8.6% from 2024 to 2025, climbing from 968 to 1,051 cases. While the majority of these incidents are attributed to electrical faults or unattended cooking, the Sembawang case stands out due to the criminal nature of the findings. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the event as the suspect remains under police watch.
