Five individuals were hospitalized following a fire at a fifth-floor unit in Block 684 Race Course Road, Singapore, on the evening of August 3, 2026. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) reported receiving an alert about the blaze at approximately 7:10 p.m. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered a bedroom within the unit fully engulfed in flames and successfully extinguished the fire using a water jet.
During the rescue operation, SCDF personnel located five people trapped inside the apartment. One individual was rescued by police officers, while the remaining four were brought to safety by SCDF firefighters. Of the five victims, three were found unconscious at the scene. Three of the victims were transported to Singapore General Hospital, while two were conveyed to Tan Tock Seng Hospital for urgent medical treatment.

The fire caused significant alarm among residents in the Little India district. Nearby neighbors reported thick black smoke filling the corridors and exterior of the block, with soot visibly coating the facade of the affected fifth-floor unit. Witnesses described a rapid escalation of the fire, noting that the metal window grilles of the unit appeared to have been severely damaged or destroyed by the heat.
Denise Phua, Member of Parliament for Jalan Besar GRC, arrived at the scene around 8 p.m. to coordinate relief efforts. She confirmed that town council staff were mobilized to clean the area and provide support to displaced residents. Care packs were distributed, and temporary housing arrangements were made for affected family members. Phua noted that several of the victims are elderly, with reports suggesting four of the five individuals are in their 70s or 80s.
Context of Residential Fire Safety
This incident follows a series of recent residential fires in Singapore, raising concerns about household fire safety protocols. Earlier in the week, fatal fires were reported in Clementi and MacPherson. The SCDF’s 2025 annual report highlighted that residential fires remain a persistent challenge, with unattended cooking and electrical faults—including overloaded sockets and issues with personal mobility devices—identified as the primary causes of domestic blazes.
While the cause of the Race Course Road fire remains under investigation, the SCDF continues to emphasize the importance of fire prevention measures. Authorities are currently reviewing the scene to determine the specific ignition point and whether any specific electrical or household hazards contributed to the rapid spread of the fire.
