Sony Pictures Shakes Up Genre Division With YouTube Executive Hire
Sony Pictures Entertainment has appointed The Hollywood Reporter veteran YouTube executive Fede Goldenberg as the new head of its genre label, Screen Gems. Goldenberg, who spent 15 years at the Google-owned video platform most recently as head of film and TV partnerships, succeeds Ashley Brucks, who is transitioning to a producing role at the studio.
Under the leadership shift announced by Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group President Sanford Panitch, Screen Gems will expand its traditional focus on genre films to explicitly prioritize theatrical projects developed by digital-native storytellers. The move is designed to bypass standard development pipelines and directly harness the built-in audience trust that digital creators have already cultivated online.
The Rise of Digital-Native Storytellers at the Box Office
The strategic pivot comes on the heels of a transformative box office season driven by independent digital creators who amassed massive followings on YouTube and other platforms. Independent successes such as Curry Barker’s Obsession, Kane Parsons’ Backrooms, and Markiplier’s Iron Lung demonstrated that short-form digital filmmakers could command large, pre-existing audiences and translate that engagement into theatrical viability.
According to Deadline, Screen Gems’ recent theatrical slate includes Insidious: Out of the Further, which grossed $169.5 million globally, and Evil Dead: Burn, a collaborative release with New Line and Ghost House that brought in $72.4 million worldwide. Studio executives believe that onboarding an executive with deep roots in the digital creator ecosystem will give Sony an early advantage in securing the next wave of breakout talent.
Leadership Transition and Industry Context
Fede Goldenberg brings more than 20 years of experience across entertainment, technology, and digital media to the post. During his tenure at YouTube, he played a central role in guiding the early cinematic careers of Barker, Parsons, and Markiplier, while also driving key platform initiatives such as securing the exclusive digital release of Iron Lung and managing content partnerships with major studios.
Meanwhile, outgoing Screen Gems president Ashley Brucks leaves behind a three-year legacy that included overseeing profitable genre releases like Tarot and horror sequels. Brucks, a former Paramount executive known for bringing in the original Found Footage hit Paranormal Activity and helping relaunch the Scream franchise, will continue her relationship with Sony as a producer on upcoming films across the studio’s labels.
Strategic Implications for Hollywood Development
Industry observers note that Goldenberg’s appointment marks the first time a major Hollywood studio division has formally restructured its leadership around the digital creator talent pool. Rather than spending tens of millions of dollars convincing moviegoers to trust a newly manufactured studio property, Sony is betting on creators who have already spent years building direct, high-trust relationships with millions of dedicated followers.
Whether this digital-first approach will consistently yield profitable theatrical blockbusters remains a subject of intense debate among traditional filmmakers and studio analysts. However, with Panitch confirming that Goldenberg will report directly to him to build out this new creative pipeline, Sony is positioning itself at the absolute forefront of Hollywood’s ongoing evolution toward creator-driven intellectual property.
