JOHANNESBURG (Azat TV) – At least 27 people were killed in two separate mass shootings at entertainment venues near Johannesburg and Cape Town, the South African Police Service confirmed. The coordinated and violent nature of the weekend attacks has drawn intense scrutiny over public security and armed crime in the country, leaving local communities and law enforcement searching for answers as a manhunt gets underway.

Twin Attacks Target Entertainment Venues

According to reports detailed by Euronews, the first incident unfolded on Saturday evening when armed assailants opened fire outside and inside a tavern located west of Johannesburg. Police stated that suspects armed with automatic rifles and handguns targeted patrons, ransacking some victims for mobile phones before torching two vehicles and fleeing the scene. The attack claimed the lives of 13 men and four women. Shortly after, a second deadly shooting occurred early Sunday morning in Lwandle, a township on the outskirts of Cape Town, where gunmen entered an entertainment venue and opened fire. Five people died at the scene, and five others succumbed to their injuries at hospitals, while eleven more sustained injuries requiring ongoing medical treatment.

Law Enforcement Response and Investigation Status

Local authorities have launched comprehensive murder and attempted murder investigations into both mass casualty events, mobilizing specialized tactical units and detectives to track down the perpetrators. As of Sunday, no arrests had been publicly announced by the South African Police Service. Investigators have not yet confirmed whether any links exist between the Johannesburg tavern assault and the Cape Town venue shooting, leaving key operational motives unverified while forensic teams process both crime scenes.

The sudden escalation of high-casualty armed violence in densely populated entertainment venues underscores persistent vulnerabilities in community policing and the proliferation of illegal firearms across South Africa.
