Investigation into Suspicious Death
Victoria Police have confirmed the discovery of human remains during an extensive search for 13-year-old Layla Jeffery in the state’s west. The teenager had been reported missing by her family on July 5, one day after she was last seen on McCracken Street in the small town of Donald.
While formal identification is pending, authorities believe the remains belong to the missing girl. Detective Inspector David Dunstan of the Missing Persons Squad confirmed that a 16-year-old boy from the Swan Hill area has been arrested and is currently in custody. Additionally, two women—aged 53 and 55—are assisting investigators with their inquiries.
Community in Mourning
The discovery has left the close-knit community of Donald in shock. Local officials, including Buloke Shire Mayor Graeme Milne and Councillor Charmaine Delaney, have expressed their profound devastation, noting that the incident has sent a ripple effect of fear and grief through the town. “When you’re in a population like Donald and everyone knows everyone, this really does upset the community,” resident Shane O’Shea stated.
Police are treating the death as suspicious and have executed a search warrant at a property in Donald as part of the ongoing investigation. Detective Inspector Dunstan stated that authorities are “quietly confident” that those responsible are currently in custody, but emphasized that the investigation into the specific circumstances surrounding the death remains active.

Authorities are urging parents in the area to speak with their children regarding any interactions they may have had with Layla or her friendship groups on social media.
