Golf legend Tiger Woods and his architectural firm are reportedly poised to take on a major new design commission on the north coast of Northern Ireland, according to regional reporting. As detailed by GolfMagic, citing local coverage from the Derry Journal, the 15-time major champion has been selected to create a championship-caliber links layout at Bellarena near Magilligan.
While developers have not yet issued a formal confirmation, municipal sources have indicated that the agreement is moving forward. The £30 million development represents a significant infrastructural investment for the Causeway Coast and is intended to establish the first new links course of its kind in the region in over a century.
Project Background and Regional Stakes
The ambitious tourism and sporting initiative is being spearheaded by the Galgorm Collection, a prominent hospitality operator that already manages established parkland courses in Ballymena and Limavady. The company initially unveiled its high-level vision for the Bellarena site last year, aiming to cement the Causeway Coast’s reputation as a world-class international golf destination.
Speculation regarding the lead architect has swirled across the sporting and construction sectors in recent weeks. Local political representation has since provided clearer indication. “We received a briefing and it was confirmed to us that Tiger Woods has been signed up to design the course at Bellarena,” a Causeway Coast and Glens councillor stated, as noted in the GolfMagic report.
When approached for comment, representatives for the hospitality group stopped short of confirming the designer’s identity while acknowledging the broader progression of the works. A Galgorm Collection spokesperson remarked that they are actively progressing plans for the proposed championship course and look forward to confirming a design appointment in due course.
The TGR Design Portfolio and International Reach
Should the agreement be formally finalized, the Bellarena project would constitute Tiger Woods’ very first golf course design commission on the island of Ireland. Founded in 2006, TGR Design has steadily expanded its global footprint with high-profile layouts across North America and international markets.
The firm’s existing portfolio includes Bluejack National in Texas, El Cardonal at Diamante in Mexico, and Payne’s Valley in Missouri. Beyond full-scale championship courses, the design team has also crafted shorter layouts such as The Hay at Pebble Beach in California, alongside active ventures in New Jersey, Virginia, and international markets including Vietnam.
Broader Context and Sporting Return
Alongside his architectural endeavors, fresh attention has focused on Woods’ potential return to competitive play. The 50-year-old has remained absent from professional tournaments since missing the cut at the 2024 Open Championship and navigating a period marked by personal and driving infractions.
However, former TGL teammate Kevin Kisner has publicly expressed optimism regarding Woods’ readiness to feature in upcoming team matches. Observers have also speculated about potential appearances at the Hero World Challenge and a targeted entry for the 2027 Masters, alongside anticipated family pairings at the annual PNC Championship.
