Xbox Imposes Hard November Deadline on French Studio
Arkane Lyon faces a critical juncture as Microsoft’s gaming division has reportedly set a hard deadline of November 13th for the studio to find an external buyer, according to a report by French publication GamingBolt citing Le Monde. If a purchaser is not secured before the expiration of this window, the studio could be shut down, putting approximately 217 jobs directly at risk.
The ultimatum follows an earlier internal notification delivered to staff on July 16th. In the wake of that communication, local labor unions reported an initial atmosphere of shock that has since escalated into deep frustration, with employee representatives characterizing recent corporate restructuring decisions by Xbox management as incoherent.
Financial Health and Marvel’s Blade Development Status
Despite the looming threat of closure, union representatives have maintained that the studio operates in good financial health. Furthermore, development has continued uninterrupted on the highly anticipated title Marvel’s Blade. According to GamingBolt, internal teams working on the project report that production is nearing completion and have expressed strong confidence in the game’s commercial and critical potential.
The uncertainty surrounding Arkane Lyon traces back to broader corporate measures announced in July by Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, who outlined plans for 1,600 workforce reductions and the potential divestment of four distinct studios, including Undead Labs, Compulsion Games, Ninja Theory, and Double Fine Productions. While Arkane Lyon was mentioned during those evaluations, leadership initially stated they were still determining the long-term future of the studio.
Corporate Restructuring and Broader Industry Context
The pressure on Arkane Lyon is unfolding against a backdrop of sweeping structural changes across Xbox’s operations. Recent corporate actions have included consolidating major intellectual properties, such as moving the Halo franchise under Activision’s purview and merging Turn 10 Studios with Playground Games. Reports also indicate that additional waves of workforce reductions are planned before the end of the fiscal year.
During an internal meeting earlier in the month, Sharma addressed the company’s financial trajectory, stating that operations have begun to return to growth following a period she described as a freefall. That sharp downturn followed subscriber cancellations triggered by previous price increases for the Xbox Game Pass subscription service, though leadership has recently pointed to strong early metrics for titles like Minecraft Dungeons 2 and Gears of War: E-Day as signs of stabilization.
