WASHINGTON (Azat TV) – President Donald Trump issued a severe warning to Iran on Tuesday, stating that if the Hormuz Strait is not immediately made “open for business,” the United States will retaliate by destroying all of Iran’s electricity generating plants, oil wells, and Kharg Island. Trump further suggested that Iran’s desalination plants could also be targeted.
Trump’s Ultimatum on Hormuz Strait
The president, speaking through a statement that was widely circulated, presented a stark ultimatum regarding the crucial waterway, which is a vital chokepoint for global oil shipments. “IF THE HORMUZ STRAIT IS NOT IMMEDIATELY ‘OPEN FOR BUSINESS,’ WE WILL CONCLUDE OUR LOVELY ‘STAY’ IN IRAN BY BLOWING UP AND COMPLETELY OBLITERATING ALL OF THEIR ELECTRIC GENERATING PLANTS, OIL WELLS AND KHARG ISLAND (AND POSSIBLY ALL DESALINIZATION PLANTS!),” Trump declared.
Talks with New Regime
In a separate, seemingly contradictory statement, Trump indicated that he was engaged in serious talks with Iran’s “new regime.” He expressed optimism that a deal would “PROBABLY” be reached, suggesting a potential de-escalation or diplomatic resolution alongside his aggressive threats. The juxtaposition of these statements highlights the volatile nature of the situation and Trump’s distinct negotiation style.
Geopolitical Significance of Hormuz Strait
The Hormuz Strait, a narrow waterway separating Iran from Oman and the United Arab Emirates, is one of the world’s most strategically important maritime passages. Approximately 30% of the world’s oil traded by sea passes through the strait daily. Any disruption to shipping in this region could have immediate and significant repercussions for global energy markets and international relations. Iran has previously threatened to close the strait in response to external pressures, a move that would be met with strong international opposition.
Trump’s aggressive rhetoric, coupled with his suggestion of ongoing negotiations, underscores a complex and potentially volatile dynamic in U.S.-Iran relations, particularly concerning regional security and maritime access.
