U2 has surprise-released a new six-track EP titled Easter Lily, arriving on Good Friday to bookend the Lenten season. The release follows the band’s previous surprise EP, Days of Ash, which debuted on Ash Wednesday just six weeks prior. This latest collection is currently available across all digital streaming platforms as the band continues work on a highly anticipated studio album expected later this year.
The Intent Behind ‘Easter Lily’
In a statement accompanying the release, Bono described the EP as a collection born from a desire to address the current global climate, which he characterized as “wilderness years.” The band members have utilized these tracks to explore personal questions regarding faith, the resilience of friendship, and the role of ritual in an era increasingly dominated by algorithmic influence. The EP features a range of introspective themes, from the tribute “Song for Hal”—written for the late producer Hal Wilner—to “COEXIST (I Will Bless the Lord at All Times?),” which includes a soundscape contribution by Brian Eno.
Multimedia Components and Fan Engagement
The musical release is accompanied by a 52-page digital edition of the band’s “Propaganda” zine, marking forty years since the publication’s inception. This special issue includes contributions from all four band members, featuring photography by Larry Mullen Jr., art commentary from Adam Clayton, and a dialogue between Bono and Franciscan friar Richard Rohr. To further support the launch, The Edge is hosting a track-by-track breakdown on U2 X-Radio, while additional programming, including a conversation between Bono and Rohr, is scheduled for Easter Sunday.
Looking Toward the Future
While the band continues to operate through these surprise digital releases, the primary focus remains on their forthcoming full-length record. This project will represent U2’s first collection of entirely new material since 2017’s Songs of Experience. The band has indicated that they are currently in the studio, working toward a sound they describe as “unreasonably colourful,” intended specifically for live performance environments. For now, the band has opted for a low-key rollout, noting that larger promotional efforts are reserved for a later date.
