Quick Read

  • Ukraine is deploying long-range drones with 800-1,200 mile reach.
  • Primary targets include oil refineries and logistics infrastructure deep in Russia.
  • Operations aim to isolate Crimea and force economic pressure on the Kremlin.
  • The 'First Separate Center of Unmanned Systems' manages these strikes.

Ukraine’s military has significantly expanded its deep-strike drone campaign, utilizing the First Separate Center of Unmanned Systems to target critical Russian infrastructure. These units, operating with high mobility, deploy drones capable of traveling between 800 and 1,200 miles to reach targets as far as Moscow and Siberia.

The campaign, which has escalated sharply throughout 2026, focuses primarily on disrupting the Russian oil industry. According to reports from the field, these strikes have led to fuel rationing in various Russian regions and a measurable decline in refinery output. Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov stated that the ongoing strikes are effectively isolating occupied Crimea, aiming to render the peninsula logistically unsustainable for Russian forces.

George Barros of the Institute for the Study of War notes that the ability to launch hundreds of long-range vehicles daily has become a pillar of Ukraine’s strategic defense. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has characterized these operations as “Ukrainian sanctions,” intended to inflict direct economic costs on the Kremlin to force a favorable peace settlement.

Despite Russia’s attempts to intercept these platforms, the high volume and rapid deployment cycle—likened by unit commanders to Formula 1 pit stops—have allowed Ukrainian forces to bypass air defenses. As the conflict enters a prolonged phase, these drone systems serve as a critical asymmetric tool, compensating for a relative lack of long-range cruise and ballistic missiles.
