Global Recall Details
Volkswagen Group and Audi have initiated a massive global recall affecting approximately 2.86 million vehicles. The safety action follows findings from Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) that a specific steering gear bolt is susceptible to corrosion, which could lead to structural failure and a potential loss of steering control, according to Quartz.
The recall encompasses a wide range of popular models produced between September 2013 and July 2024. Affected Volkswagen models include the Golf, Golf Variant, Tiguan, Touran, and Caddy. Audi’s Q3 models manufactured between October 2017 and May 2024 are also subject to the recall. Of the total affected fleet, approximately 2.16 million are Volkswagen-branded vehicles and 696,000 are Audi models.
Technical Nature of the Defect
According to The Associated Press, the defect stems from the degradation of a mounting bolt over several years of operation, particularly in environments where road salt is used. The salt exposure accelerates the corrosion process, which can eventually cause the bolt head to break. In severe cases, this failure leaves only a single mounting point holding the steering rack to the subframe, risking housing fracture and complete loss of steering capability.
Audi confirmed that internal inspections identified this specific vulnerability. While the KBA has noted that the investigation remains ongoing, the agency has reported no known incidents involving damage to persons or property resulting from this defect to date.
Next Steps for Owners
The repair process involves replacing the susceptible bolt with a new, more corrosion-resistant component. Volkswagen states that the repair is free of charge to customers and typically takes about one hour to complete at an authorized workshop. Owners are advised to contact their local dealership or use their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to check if their specific vehicle is included in the safety action.
In the United States, Volkswagen Group of America is managing a separate, related recall involving 208,724 SUVs, including the 2018 Tiguan, 2018-2019 Atlas, and 2019-2021 Audi Q3. U.S. owners can expect notification letters beginning November 10, 2026.
