The WNBA announced Thursday that Seattle Storm co-owner Celeste Keaton has been suspended from the team’s next five home games and fined an undisclosed amount following an altercation with fans at Tuesday night’s game against the Indiana Fever. The confrontation occurred as fans demonstrated in support of Fever player Sophie Cunningham, who had recently spoken out regarding the participation of transgender athletes in women’s sports.
According to reports, the incident involved two teenage girls wearing shirts depicting XX and XY chromosomes. The fans alleged that Keaton approached them, used profane language, and called them “insane.” A video of the interaction was shared on social media by podcast host Brandi Kruse, prompting a swift response from the Storm organization.
“Everyone who attends a Storm game deserves to feel welcome, and we remain committed to creating an inclusive environment where every fan is treated with respect,” Storm majority owner Ginny Gilder said in an official apology issued Wednesday.
Sophie Cunningham addressed the incident on X, stating, “Truly embarrassing of the co-owner. Unfortunately shows the type of leader she is.” She further emphasized her belief in inclusive spaces, noting that individuals of all backgrounds are welcome at her “table” despite differing viewpoints.
The Indiana Fever organization clarified that they had no prior knowledge of the demonstration, stating, “Our only goal as a team, whether at home or away, is to win basketball games and make Fever fans for life.” The Fever did not make Cunningham or teammate Caitlin Clark available to the media following the game.
