Wrexham AFC has officially confirmed the permanent signing of defender Joe Worrall from Championship rivals Burnley. The 29-year-old center-back has penned a two-year contract with the Welsh club, which includes an option for an additional year, following a deal reportedly valued at approximately £2 million.
The arrival of Worrall comes as Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson looks to address a challenging start to the 2026-27 Championship campaign. The Red Dragons have struggled to maintain defensive solidity, failing to keep a clean sheet in their opening four matches. Parkinson recently voiced his frustrations after a 2-1 defeat to Birmingham City, describing the goals conceded as some of the “softest” during his tenure.
A Proven Leader for Parkinson’s Squad
Worrall joins Wrexham with significant experience, having spent the majority of his career at Nottingham Forest, where he made 226 appearances and served as captain. His CV includes a pivotal role in Forest’s 2021-22 promotion to the Premier League, an achievement that earned him a spot in the Championship Team of the Season. Since moving to Burnley in 2024, Worrall has made 27 appearances, though he found himself on the periphery under new Burnley manager Nicky Hayen this term.

Strategic Shifts and Future Objectives
The signing follows the departure of 10-cap England international Conor Coady, who left Wrexham by mutual consent earlier this week. Wrexham’s recruitment strategy this summer has been aggressive, with the club already bringing in goalkeeper Anthony Patterson, wing-backs Danny Imray, Issa Kabore, and Jacques Ekomie, as well as midfielder Ben Whiteman.
Beyond the defense, reports indicate that Wrexham is also in advanced talks to sign Sheffield United attacking midfielder Callum O’Hare. While Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has expressed his desire to retain the player, Wrexham’s financial activity suggests a clear intent to compete at the top end of the Championship table.
