Developers working on the open-source Asahi Linux project have submitted new patches to the Linux kernel, enabling preliminary USB4 and Thunderbolt connectivity for Apple Mac computers powered by M1, M2, and M3 series processors.
The update marks a major technical step toward enabling native Linux functionality on Apple Silicon hardware. According to documentation associated with the project, the newly integrated code allows the Linux kernel to interface directly with the customized USB4 and Thunderbolt controllers built into Apple’s proprietary ARM architecture.
However, project contributors emphasize that the implementation is in its early experimental phase and is prone to bugs. Key capabilities remain missing from this initial rollout. Specifically, the current drivers do not support PCI Express (PCIe) tunneling or DisplayPort alt-mode, meaning users cannot yet output video to external monitors through these high-speed ports.
Additionally, developers noted a known operational bug where connecting a USB4 peripheral disrupts the system’s ability to enter sleep mode properly. The project team is actively addressing these functional gaps to stabilize power management and expand controller capabilities in upcoming kernel updates.
Since Apple introduced its custom system-on-chip platform in 2020, running alternative operating systems on Mac hardware has relied heavily on reverse-engineering custom hardware interfaces. While Asahi Linux has previously achieved operational support for basic display output, Wi-Fi, audio, and power control, enabling complex high-speed I/O standards like Thunderbolt has remained one of the most technical challenges facing independent developers.
