A New Era for the Oranje

The Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) announced on August 12, 2026, the appointment of Xavi Hernández as the new head coach of the Netherlands national team. The 46-year-old Spaniard has signed a four-year contract, committing him to lead the squad through the 2028 European Championships and the 2030 World Cup. This appointment marks a significant shift in policy for the Dutch federation, as Xavi becomes the first foreign manager to lead the side since Ernst Happel in 1977-78.

Xavi returns to coaching following a two-year hiatus. His previous managerial tenure was at FC Barcelona, where he succeeded Ronald Koeman in 2021, eventually guiding the club to a LaLiga title in the 2022-23 season before departing in 2024. His appointment follows the resignation of Koeman, who stepped down after the Netherlands suffered a disappointing elimination in the Round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup in North America at the hands of Morocco.

Philosophical Alignment

In his introductory statement, Xavi emphasized a deep-rooted affinity for the Dutch style of football, citing the profound influence of Johan Cruyff and Rinus Michels on his development at Barcelona’s La Masia academy. “As someone who received his training at Barça’s academy, with strong influences from Johan Cruyff and Rinus Michels, among others, I feel a special connection to Dutch football,” Xavi stated. He also acknowledged the formative roles played by former Dutch managers Louis van Gaal and Frank Rijkaard during his playing career.

The KNVB’s decision follows a period of search for a successor to Koeman. While former Liverpool manager Arne Slot confirmed that he had been in discussions regarding the vacancy, he ultimately declined the offer, citing a preference to remain within the club football environment. With the vacancy filled, Xavi is tasked with revitalizing a team that struggled to meet expectations during the most recent World Cup cycle, aiming to implement a possession-based, attacking system that aligns with the traditional Dutch footballing identity.
