This change marks the first time the standard and budget-tier iPhones have been excluded from Apple’s traditional September keynote.
According to the technical data, the identifiers V63 (iPhone 18 Pro), V64 (iPhone 18 Pro Max), and V68 (the foldable iPhone Ultra) are slated for a fall 2026 debut. Conversely, the V62 (iPhone Air 2), V67 (standard iPhone 18), and V69 (iPhone 18e) are pushed to a spring 2027 release window. This shift effectively makes the iPhone 18 Pro the new “default” starting point for consumers shopping during the 2026 holiday season.
The Engineering Behind the Foldable Ultra
The V68 identifier, mapped to the highly anticipated foldable iPhone Ultra, confirms the device’s unique architectural requirements. The software includes specific power management code for a dual-battery system, which is necessary to balance capacity across the two halves of a folding chassis. The device is expected to feature a 7.8-inch inner display and a 5.5-inch outer screen. Due to the extreme 4.5-millimeter unfolded thickness, the device will forgo the traditional TrueDepth Face ID array in favor of a power-button-integrated Touch ID sensor, a first for a flagship-tier iPhone since 2017.

By withholding the base iPhone 18 until 2027, Apple is forcing a higher entry price for its fall 2026 launch.
