Growth Driven by Retail Expansion and Integration
DSM Fresh Foods, the parent company of the omnichannel meat delivery brand Zappfresh, has reported a significant 58% year-on-year revenue increase, reaching approximately Rs 74 crore for the first quarter of fiscal year 2027. This provisional business update, filed with stock exchanges, underscores the company’s aggressive scaling strategy.
The company’s growth trajectory was bolstered by the acquisition of Meevaa Foods in early July, which brought the combined business to an estimated pro forma quarterly revenue run rate of Rs 85 crore. Zappfresh has successfully expanded its retail footprint to nearly 200 co-branded outlets, hitting its internal targets ahead of the projected timeline. This expansion is part of a broader push to increase the contribution of its high-margin B2C business.
Operational Scaling and Global Reach
Beyond retail, DSM Fresh Foods has focused heavily on backward integration to secure its supply chain. The firm has onboarded 10 new sourcing partners and initiated 270 acres of land aggregation, now working with over 1,700 seafood farmers. To further support its aquaculture platform, the company has incorporated Varuna Aquatech Pvt Ltd. Internationally, the company has expanded its distribution network into the UK, Canada, and GCC markets, including a new distribution partnership in Dubai.
The Risk of Social Media Fraud
While established platforms like Zappfresh are scaling through institutional and retail channels, the broader online meat market is seeing a rise in fraudulent activity. Consumers are increasingly reporting losses to sophisticated scams operating through private Facebook groups. In one recent case, a couple in Hamilton lost $300 after paying for a lamb carcass through a page titled “Premium Meat Supplies.”
These fraudulent operations often utilize multiple admin accounts to build artificial credibility, sharing consistent WhatsApp numbers and email addresses to solicit bank transfers. Unlike legitimate omnichannel platforms, these pages frequently cease communication once payment is received, leaving victims without recourse. Investigative experts warn that users engaging with unverified social media sellers risk not only financial loss but also the compromise of sensitive personal information, including home addresses and financial account data.
