An estimated 5.7 million Texans are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home during the week of the July 4 holiday, according to new projections released by AAA. This figure represents a slight increase of 0.2% compared to 2025 travel data.
Despite national gas prices reaching four-year highs, the vast majority of travelers remain committed to road transport. AAA reports that 4.9 million Texans plan to travel by car, while approximately 564,000 will fly to their destinations. An additional 249,000 travelers have opted for alternative modes of transport, including buses, trains, and cruises, marking a 2.3% year-over-year growth in these sectors.
Galen Grillo, vice president and general manager of AAA Texas, noted that travel volumes remain near record levels. “For many Texans, traveling the week of July 4th is tradition,” Grillo said. “Whether travelers are leaving for the full week or a long holiday weekend, planning ahead can help reduce stress and keep everyone safer.”
AAA advises drivers to conduct necessary vehicle maintenance before departure and reminds the public to prioritize road safety, specifically avoiding impaired driving during holiday festivities.
