A Father’s Mission
In a remarkable display of determination and family spirit, Pete Haslam is set to take on the ‘Ted Haslam Three Peaks Challenge’ on June 26 and 27. Along with 15 friends and family members, Haslam will navigate the demanding 23-mile route across England, Scotland, and Wales, pushing and carrying his 11-year-old son, Ted, in his wheelchair.
The challenge involves conquering Snowdon, Scafell Pike, and Ben Nevis—a combined ascent of over 10,000 meters—within a 30-hour window. For the Haslam family, the trek is more than a physical feat; it is a fundraiser for the charity Molly Ollys, which supports children with terminal or life-limiting illnesses.
Overcoming Obstacles
Ted Haslam was diagnosed with an aggressive spinal tumor at the age of three, which left him paralyzed. Reflecting on the motivation behind the climb, Pete Haslam stated, “We don’t see the wheelchair as being an obstacle. We want to let Ted do things that everyone else can do.”
The family’s connection to Molly Ollys dates back to Ted’s treatment at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, where the charity provided essential support and resources. By undertaking this grueling journey, the Haslams aim to raise awareness and funds to help the organization continue its mission of providing toys, books, and support to families in hospitals across the UK.
“This challenge is about more than mountains,” Pete Haslam added. “It’s about showing what’s possible. It’s about pushing limits, inspiring others, and making a difference.” Having successfully climbed Ben Nevis with Ted last year, the family is now scaling their efforts to complete all three peaks, turning a personal milestone into a collective act of advocacy.
