An Australian aviation crew has successfully executed a rare and highly challenging midwinter medical evacuation, rescuing an ailing American expedition member from McMurdo Station in Antarctica and flying them to New Zealand for urgent treatment. The operation, conducted in extreme sub-zero temperatures and near-total darkness, represents one of the most logistically demanding polar flights ever completed by a civilian aircraft.

The evacuation flight was operated by Melbourne-based aviation company Skytraders using an Airbus A319 Long Range aircraft, carrying the call sign Snowbird 1. According to official statements from Skytraders and the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD), the jet departed from the Tasmanian city of Hobart and made the five-hour and 30-minute journey to Phoenix Airfield, an ice-runway facility near the United States’ McMurdo Station, on July 31 following an urgent request for medical assistance.

A Race Against the Polar Darkness

The mission was severely constrained by the harsh environmental realities of the Antarctic winter. In this region, the sun set on March 23 and will not rise again until September 21, leaving the continent in perpetual darkness. The flight crew had to navigate through what is known as nautical twilight—a minimal, faint light that practical operators describe as pitch blackness.

Initial attempts to reach the Ross Ice Shelf facility were delayed. A severe snowstorm forced planners to abort a scheduled flight a day earlier, narrowing the operational window. After a 12-hour weather delay in Hobart, the team identified a brief clearing and initiated takeoff. The Airbus A319 landed on the ice runway in a temperature of minus 43°C (minus 45.4°F), with wind speeds of approximately 8 knots compounding the extreme chill.

Operating on the Edge of Aircraft Capabilities

According to the mission’s copilot, Louise Robertson, the flight pushed the physical limits of the aircraft itself. “We are right on the verge of the limitation of the aircraft,” Robertson told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). “It was very close to being too cold. It got down to minus 43C, which is the coldest I’ve ever felt.”

Skytraders deputy chief executive Duncan Mackay revealed that the operation required rapid technical preparation. Within 24 hours of receiving the emergency call, the civilian airliner underwent a complete physical refit to transition into a specialized medevac configuration. Mackay emphasized that while Skytraders has managed winter evacuations in the past, this mission was uniquely dangerous due to its proximity to the June 21 winter solstice, when polar temperatures and darkness are at their peak.

Captain Al Wallach, the flight’s pilot, credited the success to intense multi-agency coordination. “The conditions we encountered were right on the edge of even the most specialized aircraft capability,” Wallach stated, noting that the successful landing on an unlit ice runway required seamless collaboration between flight crews, meteorologists, operational planners, and ground runway teams.

International Cooperation in the Frozen South

Upon landing, the patient was quickly transferred to the aircraft. Snowbird 1 then completed the return leg to Christchurch, New Zealand. The U.S. National Science Foundation confirmed that the patient was admitted to Christchurch Hospital in a “serious condition.” While New Zealand’s Ministry of Health declined to comment on the patient’s ongoing treatment, the AAD and Skytraders confirmed that the individual is currently recovering.

Emma Campbell, head of the Australian Antarctic Division, praised the operation as a testament to the international partnership governing the continent. “This was a complex operation carried out in the depths of the Antarctic winter, and it highlights both the capability of our people and the strong partnerships that underpin Antarctic programs around the world,” Campbell said.

Midwinter evacuations from Antarctica remain exceedingly rare due to the high risks associated with icing, fuel freezing, and lack of visual references. Prior to this mission, recent emergencies were handled primarily by military turboprop aircraft; the New Zealand Air Force utilized a C-130 Hercules in April to evacuate a worker, and a similar flight was conducted in August of last year to evacuate three individuals. The successful deployment of a civilian Airbus A319 under these conditions marks a significant milestone in polar aviation capability.
