Apple has officially announced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, introducing significant hardware revisions including the company’s first variable-aperture 48MP Fusion Main camera. According to The Apple Post, the new camera system utilizes six blades to physically adjust the aperture, providing users with enhanced control over depth of field and improved performance in varying lighting conditions. Alongside this, Apple has integrated new professional camera controls for manual adjustment of shutter speed, white balance, and aperture, signaling a move toward more granular creative control for mobile photographers.
Performance and Thermal Management
Under the hood, the iPhone 18 Pro transitions to the 2nm A20 Pro chip. Apple has paired this processor with a redesigned vapor chamber that offers three times the surface area of the cooling system found in the iPhone 17 Pro. This architectural change is designed to sustain peak performance for longer durations, specifically benefiting users engaged in gaming, high-end video editing, and intensive AI processing tasks. The A20 Pro introduces a six-core CPU and seven-core GPU, with Apple claiming a 40% increase in graphics performance and a 50% boost in memory bandwidth.
Design and Battery Efficiency
Visually, the most notable change is a reduced Dynamic Island, which now occupies less display space while maintaining support for up to three simultaneous Live Activities. Battery efficiency has also seen a marked improvement. The iPhone 18 Pro is rated for 36 hours of video playback, while the Pro Max model achieves up to 45 hours, representing the largest battery life jump in the series’ history. These gains are attributed to the efficiency of the A20 Pro chip, the new C2 modem, and internal space optimization in eSIM-only models.
Pricing and Availability
The new lineup arrives with a price adjustment: the iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199, and the Pro Max starts at $1,299—a $100 increase over the previous generation. The devices are available in black, silver, glacier, and a new burgundy finish. Pre-orders begin Saturday, September 12, with a retail release scheduled for September 18.
