World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka has made an emotional plea to the All England Club, urging organizers to reverse a long-standing policy that prohibits pet dogs from entering the Wimbledon grounds. The Belarusian star, who recently advanced to the third round, expressed the personal toll the policy takes, noting that leaving her dog, Ash, alone while on the road is difficult for both of them.
“It just sometimes hurts to leave him at the house by himself because he really gets attached and he suffers,” Sabalenka said during a press conference. “I beg you, let the dogs inside.”
The Debate Over Tradition
The issue has gained significant traction following the French Open, which recently introduced pet-friendly accommodations, including official accreditations and a dedicated dog concierge. In contrast, Wimbledon maintains a strict ban. According to journalist Jon Wertheim, the All England Club cites UK quarantine regulations and concerns regarding the protection of the historic grass courts and public areas from potential damage.
Tennis legend and Wimbledon member Martina Navratilova has been a vocal critic of the policy, labeling the club’s justifications as a “baloney excuse.” She argued that professional tennis players make immense personal sacrifices to compete globally and should be afforded the comfort of their pets. “I think one day they will change. I’m a member here. I insist we must change these rules,” she stated.
Mixed Views Among Players
While Sabalenka and Navratilova push for reform, other players have adopted a more cautious stance. Coco Gauff, while expressing a love for dogs, noted that the unique environment of a club setting presents logistical challenges. “This is held at a club, which I don’t think they allow dogs in general. So I respect the rules,” Gauff remarked, highlighting concerns about gym, locker room, and food area hygiene.
As the 2026 tournament progresses, the tension between maintaining the traditional, pristine environment of the All England Club and evolving to meet the modern welfare needs of traveling athletes remains a point of contention.
