The BBC has officially confirmed the renewal of its hit comedy-drama Ludwig for a third series, a move made well ahead of the highly anticipated debut of its second season later this year. The decision follows the show’s massive success, which the broadcaster describes as its most successful scripted production launch since 2024.
Created by Mark Brotherhood and starring David Mitchell as the puzzle-obsessed detective, the series has resonated strongly with audiences who enjoy “cozy crime” dramas like Death in Paradise. According to official BBC figures, the inaugural series reached 11.8 million viewers in total, with the first series drawing 9.5 million viewers within its initial 28 days of release.
David Mitchell will reprise his role alongside Anna Maxwell Martin. Production continues to be a collaboration between Big Talk Studios and That Mitchell and Webb Company, with international co-production support from Germany’s ZDF. Jon Petrie, the BBC’s Director of Comedy Commissioning, praised the show for its “sharp writing” and ability to blend comedy with complex mystery elements.
Kenton Allen, CEO of Big Talk Studios, noted the significance of the early renewal: “In a crowded global market, for audiences to have embraced Ludwig on this scale feels incredibly special.” The third series will consist of six one-hour episodes, with Chris Foggin returning as the principal director.
