Union Pacific’s Big Boy No. 4014, widely recognized as the world’s largest operating steam locomotive, is currently mid-journey on a massive 7,000-mile, coast-to-coast tour. The expedition, designed to commemorate America’s 250th anniversary, has been drawing significant crowds across the Susquehanna Valley and Western Pennsylvania, with local communities hosting organized watch parties to catch a glimpse of the 1.2-million-pound engineering marvel.
The locomotive, which measures 133 feet in length, was originally designed in the 1940s to haul heavy freight across steep grades in the American West. After being retired in 1961, it was reacquired by Union Pacific in 2013 and underwent an extensive restoration process, returning to service in 2019 as a functional symbol of the nation’s industrial heritage.
Logistics and Community Impact
The tour includes over 50 whistle stops across 10 states. Conductor Ed Dickens noted that the reception in communities like Lebanon, Pennsylvania, reflects the deep connection between the American public and the history of rail transportation. Local organizers have turned these visits into significant regional events, featuring food trucks, historical exhibits, and educational activities for families.
Safety remains a priority for Union Pacific as the tour continues through Ohio and the Midwest. Officials have repeatedly urged spectators to maintain a safe distance from active tracks, warning that the locomotive’s size and power—coupled with the heat and steam it produces—pose real risks for those who venture too close.
