The bald eagle family of Big Bear Valley, led by the famous pair Jackie and Shadow, remains safe following the annual “Fireworks Spectacular” held on July 4. While the adult eagles fled their nesting tree as the 30-minute display began, they returned to their eaglets, Luna and Sandy, the following morning, according to reports from Friends of Big Bear Valley (FBBV).
Conservation Concerns and Public Pressure
The event, hosted by the tourism organization Visit Big Bear, took place approximately two miles from the nesting site. The proximity of the fireworks sparked significant public outcry, with a Change.org petition garnering over 45,000 signatures. Advocates urged local officials to either relocate the launch site or transition to drone-based light shows, citing the potential distress and physical danger posed to the raptors, particularly as the eaglets had recently begun their first flights.
Jennifer Voisard, media and website manager for FBBV, confirmed that while the adult eagles vacated the area during the 8:45 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. display, the eaglets stayed within the nest. By 6:00 a.m. the next morning, the family had reunited, with Shadow bringing food to the nest and Jackie returning to the area shortly thereafter.
Economic Stakes vs. Wildlife Protection
The controversy highlights a deepening tension between local economic recovery and environmental stewardship. Big Bear CEO Travis Scott stated that the community faced a difficult winter season with minimal snowfall, making the holiday tourism revenue critical for local businesses. Despite the pressure from environmental groups, organizers maintained that the fireworks show is an essential component of the town’s seasonal economic strategy.
While the immediate safety of the eagle family has provided relief to thousands of online observers monitoring the nest via live stream, the incident has solidified calls for a long-term policy shift regarding how Big Bear balances its tourism-reliant economy with the protection of its iconic wildlife.
