Quick Read

  • Edmonton acquired Devon Levi and a 2028 7th-round pick.
  • Buffalo received a 2028 3rd-round pick in return.
  • Levi must clear waivers this season, influencing the trade.

The Edmonton Oilers have acquired goaltender Devon Levi from the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for a 2028 third-round draft pick. The deal, finalized on July 1, 2026, also sees the Sabres send a 2028 seventh-round pick to Edmonton.

A Fresh Start for Levi

Levi, 24, enters the Oilers organization looking to revitalize a career that stalled in Buffalo. Once considered the Sabres’ goaltender of the future following a dominant collegiate career at Northeastern University, Levi struggled to maintain a consistent presence at the NHL level. After an impressive seven-game stint at the end of the 2022-23 season, he found himself splitting time between Buffalo and the AHL’s Rochester Americans, where he posted a .914 save percentage over 120 career appearances.

The move comes as the Sabres look to clear their goaltending depth chart, as Levi was set to require waivers this season. Buffalo had previously prioritized other options, including Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen and Alex Lyon, leaving little room for the former prospect.

The Oilers’ Goaltending Outlook

For Edmonton, the acquisition provides depth in a position that remains in flux. With Connor Ingram departing as a free agent, the Oilers currently have Levi and Tristan Jarry under contract. The organization is banking on Levi’s athletic profile and high hockey IQ to translate into a reliable NHL performance as he faces the pressure of waiver eligibility.
