SOUTHAMPTON, Bermuda (Azat TV) – Chandler Blanchet capitalized on favorable scoring conditions at Port Royal Golf Course, carding a season-best 9-under 62 to grab a one-shot lead after the opening round of the Butterfield Bermuda Championship, according to an Associated Press report published by Messenger-Inquirer. Blanchet’s impressive round was anchored by a pair of eagles and six birdies, placing him ahead of a crowded chasing pack as the PGA Tour fall schedule enters its final stretch.

Eagles and Birdies Propel Blanchet to the Top

Blanchet navigated the coastal layout with precision, highlighted by two standout moments on the course’s par-5 holes. His first eagle came on the seventh hole, where a calming wind allowed him to execute a smooth 5-iron to within five feet. Later, on the 17th hole—the shortest par 5 on the course featuring water trouble to the left—Blanchet drove effectively and drained a remarkable 50-foot putt.

“Just dripped in on the last revolution,” Blanchet said of the long-range conversion. His lone blemish of the day arrived on the par-4 fourth hole, his 13th of the round, where a wayward approach left him missing the green to the left.

Crowded Leaderboard and Fall FedEx Cup Stakes

Behind Blanchet, a four-way tie for second place emerged at 8-under 63, featuring Ben Kohles, Corey Conners, Danny Walker, and Canada’s Ben Silverman. Conners, the highest-ranked player in the field at No. 61, noted that the typically punishing coastal winds remained uncharacteristically mild, bringing the tournament’s scoring average down to 68.5.

For many competitors, the stakes extend far beyond a single trophy. Ranked No. 114 in the FedEx Cup Fall standings, Blanchet is fighting to secure his card among the top 100 players who will retain full status for the 2027 season, with only five tournaments remaining on the calendar.

Chasing Pack and Course Conditions

Other notable contenders took full advantage of the benign morning and afternoon weather. Mackenzie Hughes and Emiliano Grillo headlined a large group of players who signed for opening rounds of 64, placing themselves just two strokes behind the leader. Without the typical, consistently blustery gales that usually batter Port Royal Golf Course, scoring opportunities multiplied across the entire field.

Ben Kohles, who is currently positioned at No. 80 in the standings following a strong run of form that included skipping the final Korn Ferry Tour events to play on the PGA Tour, reflected on his comfortable standing. Having effectively secured his top-100 status, Kohles can now look upward toward the top 60 to chase qualification for lucrative $20 million signature events.

As the tournament progresses into its second round on Friday, October 23, players aiming to salvage their season cards or climb the leaderboard will need to maintain aggressive scoring in anticipation of potential weather shifts over the weekend. With the cut line and crucial FedEx Cup points looming large, the remaining 54 holes at Southampton promise intense competition.
