A critical rebound opportunity
Chase Hooper and Mitch Ramirez are set to meet on the main card of UFC Fight Night 281 at the Paycom Center in Oklahoma City. The lightweight bout represents a pivotal moment for both fighters, as each enters the cage desperate to halt a two-fight losing streak and secure their standing within the division.
Hooper (16-5-1 MMA, 8-5 UFC) arrives in Oklahoma City following consecutive first-round knockout losses to Alexander Hernandez and Lance Gibson Jr. These setbacks halted significant momentum for the 26-year-old, who had previously enjoyed a five-fight win streak between May 2023 and April 2025. His last victory, a unanimous decision over Jim Miller at UFC 324, remains his most recent success.
Mitch Ramirez (8-3 MMA, 0-2 UFC) is also searching for his first taste of victory under the UFC banner. Since transitioning to the promotion, Ramirez has dropped his first two appearances, with recent losses against Mike Davis and Thiago Moises. His last professional win was a first-round finish of Aireon Tavarres in December 2023.
Weight miss and fight dynamics
The lead-up to the event was marked by a weight-related complication for Hooper. During Friday morning’s weigh-ins, he tipped the scales at 157.5 pounds, missing the lightweight limit by 1.5 pounds. As a result of the miss, Hooper has forfeited 20 percent of his fight purse. Despite the infraction, the bout will proceed as scheduled.
Statistically, Hooper enters the contest as the more active and efficient striker. He lands an average of 4.50 significant strikes per minute at a 49 percent clip, compared to Ramirez’s 3.51 strikes at 44 percent. Hooper also maintains a significant advantage in grappling, averaging 2.43 takedowns per 15 minutes, while Ramirez averages 0.59. With a two-inch height advantage and a three-inch reach edge, Hooper is favored by oddsmakers at -355 compared to Ramirez’s +270.
Analysts suggest that while the weight miss is a professional setback, the matchup serves as a “get-right” opportunity for Hooper to utilize his superior grappling to find a finish. Conversely, Ramirez will need to leverage his knockout power to avoid getting trapped in scrambles that could play into Hooper’s submission-heavy style.
