Emergency Response and Property Loss

The Chelan Hills Fire in Western Douglas County has rapidly expanded to an estimated 15,000 to 20,000 acres, destroying scores of homes and structures since it ignited early Saturday, July 4, 2026. Douglas County Sheriff Tyler Caille confirmed the extensive property damage, noting that the full scope of the destruction remains difficult to assess as the blaze continues to move aggressively through the landscape.

Emergency crews are currently battling the fire under challenging conditions, with high winds and a Red Flag Warning complicating containment efforts. The fire has crested the ridge of the Waterville Plateau, moving rapidly toward the town of Mansfield. One firefighter has been hospitalized for heat exhaustion, though no other injuries have been reported.

Evacuations and Closures

Authorities have issued Level 3 “Go Now” evacuation orders for the entirety of McNeil Canyon, including dozens of residential roads, and have extended the order north to Road 20 NW and the Beebe Ranch area. Residents are urged to leave immediately with essential documents, medications, and pets. An emergency shelter has been established at Chelan Elementary School, located at 324 East Johnson Avenue in Chelan.

U.S. Highway 97 remains closed between milepost 232 and the intersection with McNeil Canyon Road, including the Beebe Bridge. The Washington State Patrol is directing traffic to alternate routes and has warned the public to stay clear of the fire zone. Sheriff Caille emphasized that unauthorized individuals attempting to enter the area to document the fire are hindering emergency operations and violating the law.

Investigation into Origins

While the exact cause of the inferno is under investigation, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is reviewing reports from witnesses who suggested the fire may have been ignited by fireworks launched from a vehicle traveling along U.S. 97. Officials have not yet confirmed these accounts but are actively pursuing all leads. State mobilization was ordered early Saturday, bringing in federal and state resources to support local ground and aerial suppression efforts.
