A Leadership Transition at Firehouse 51
NBC’s long-running drama Chicago Fire officially entered a new era with its Season 15 premiere, confirming the departure of Dermot Mulroney’s Battalion Chief Dominic “Dom” Pascal. Mulroney, who joined the cast in 2024, appeared only in the season opener, concluding a two-season arc that began following the departure of Eamonn Walker’s long-time leader, Wallace Boden. According to Deadline, as reported by AOL, showrunner Victor Teran characterized Mulroney’s brief but impactful return as a necessary “bridge” to the future of the series.
The shift in command marks a significant milestone for the production. For the first time in the show’s 15-season history, Firehouse 51 will operate without a designated Chief. Instead, Taylor Kinney’s character, Kelly Severide, is set to assume leadership duties. Teran noted that the writers had planned this structural change for some time, stating, “We needed to close out Dermot to give space for that.”
Severide’s New Responsibilities
The premiere also provided resolution to Severide’s ongoing career dilemma. After weighing an inspector role against his duties at the firehouse, Severide opted to remain at 51. However, his new position comes with increased pressure. In his final scenes, Chief Pascal warned Severide to carefully balance his dual responsibilities—managing the firehouse while continuing his private investigation into accusations stemming from the Season 14 finale—or face significant professional fallout.
Reflecting on his time with the series during a recent fan convention, Mulroney expressed gratitude for the experience. “I loved every minute of it. Became friends with this incredible crew of people,” he said, as cited by Showbiz Cheat Sheet. He highlighted the unique bond the cast shares and the meaningful connection the show maintains with real-life first responders.
Looking Ahead
While Pascal’s departure is immediate, the firehouse faces further changes this season. Original cast member Joe Miñoso, who has portrayed Joe Cruz since the series’ inception, is also expected to depart later in the season. Brandon Larracuente, who joined the cast in Season 14, acknowledged the difficulty of these exits, noting that Miñoso’s presence has been a foundational element of the show’s success. As the production moves forward, the audience remains uncertain about potential guest returns, though the show has a precedent for bringing back former cast members.
