Antonio Conte and Brighton & Hove Albion manager Fabian Hürzeler have both publicly distanced themselves from the managerial vacancy at Manchester United as intense pressure mounts on current boss Michael Carrick, ESPN reported. The speculation follows an abysmal run of form for United, culminating in a 4-1 defeat to Como in the UEFA Champions League.
Michael Carrick, who signed a two-year permanent contract in May after an interim spell that secured Champions League qualification, is currently fighting to retain his position. United have failed to secure a victory in their last seven matches across all competitions, a winless streak that stretches back to a 4-0 defeat of Sabah on September 10. Despite the mounting scrutiny, BBC Sport reported that Carrick is expected to remain in charge for the upcoming Premier League fixture against Bournemouth at Old Trafford.
Conte Denies Advanced Talks
Antonio Conte, who has been without a club since leaving Serie A champions Napoli in June, addressed the speculation via social media. The former Chelsea and Tottenham manager stated that there are currently no advanced negotiations regarding his future.
"Following recent media reports in Italy and abroad, I feel it is appropriate to clarify my position," Conte wrote. "My name has been linked with numerous clubs, but there are currently no negotiations at an advanced stage. Following a wonderful and successful spell in charge of Napoli, I will take the time I need to consider how and when to return to management." He also dismissed reports concerning financial demands, full control requests, or alleged reservations about his personality as unfounded speculation.
Hürzeler Focuses on Brighton Campaign
Meanwhile, Fabian Hürzeler has ruled out a move away from the Amex Stadium. Having guided Brighton into the UEFA Conference League last season with an eighth-place finish, the German coach has overseen an impressive start to the current campaign. Brighton have scored 23 goals—more than any other side in the English top flight—and sit third in the Premier League table after losing only once, a run that has attracted widespread external interest.
Reports also indicate that United have faced resistance from other managerial targets over the past twelve months. Former Como coach Cesc Fàbregas turned down interest due to his commitment to the Italian club’s ongoing project, while former Marseille boss Roberto De Zerbi and Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal manager Simone Inzaghi have similarly deflected approaches or links.
Institutional Context and Internal Ranks
Within Old Trafford, the hierarchy faces a complex dilemma. Sources indicate that some senior figures believe Carrick has been let down by underperforming players and recognize that frequent managerial changes have failed to deliver long-term stability since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure in 2013. Nevertheless, club decision-makers have reportedly begun the preliminary process of identifying potential replacements should results fail to improve.
