A widespread outbreak of the cyclospora parasite, linked to contaminated lettuce, has caused a significant decline in foot traffic across major U.S. restaurant chains. According to data from Placer.ai, consumer concern has extended well beyond the brands specifically named by federal health authorities.
Last week, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identified lettuce served at certain Taco Bell locations as a source of the outbreak. Following this public disclosure on July 17, Taco Bell experienced a 19% drop in daily foot traffic. Even prior to the official announcement, the chain had already seen a 16.9% decline on July 15 as reports of the parasite began to surface.
The impact has rippled across the fast-casual sector. Subway saw a 19.2% decline in traffic on July 16, while Chopt reported drops of 10.9% and 14.3% on July 16 and 17, respectively. Other major chains, including Cava, Chipotle, and Panera Bread, also recorded traffic declines of nearly 10% during the same period.
While investigators continue to search for the definitive origin of the outbreak, the FDA indicated on Monday that it considers Taylor Farms—a supplier for many Taco Bell locations—the likely source. Chipotle, responding to the industry-wide alarm, stated that it does not believe its ingredients are associated with the current investigation. Despite the localized drops for specific brands, the broader quick-service industry has remained relatively stable, with total visits declining by only about 1% to 2%.
