Denmark has reached a significant milestone in its automotive market transition, with battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) accounting for 80.2% of all new passenger car registrations in July. Data released by the industry association Mobility Denmark, sourced from bilstatistik.dk, confirms that 11,672 out of 14,562 newly registered vehicles were electric.
The shift is particularly pronounced among private consumers. According to the report, 97% of new cars acquired by private individuals in Denmark during July were battery-electric models. Mads Rørvig, CEO of Mobility Denmark, attributed this rapid adoption to current tax policies that have rendered electric vehicles economically competitive against traditional combustion-engine alternatives.
“The electric car has become the natural choice for nearly all Danes when buying a new car,” Rørvig stated. “With 97% of new cars for private individuals being electric, it demonstrates how far the green transformation of the automotive market has come.”
Despite the current momentum, the association has issued a note of caution regarding future market performance. A gradual increase in the registration tax for electric vehicles is scheduled to take effect next year. Mobility Denmark warns that this fiscal adjustment is likely to increase the retail price of popular EV models, which could potentially decelerate the current pace of adoption.
Regardless of the looming tax changes, the industry remains optimistic about reaching long-term environmental targets. Mobility Denmark projects that the total number of electric cars on Danish roads will reach one million by 2027. At that juncture, approximately one in three passenger vehicles in the country is expected to be electric, a development that the association anticipates will significantly reduce national CO2 emissions.
