A Historic Birthday Performance
Los Angeles Dodgers left-hander Justin Wrobleski turned his 26th birthday into a historic milestone at the 96th MLB All-Star Game in Philadelphia. Entering the game in the seventh inning at Citizens Bank Park, Wrobleski delivered a dominant performance, striking out the side on just 12 pitches. By the time his two-inning relief appearance concluded, he had recorded five strikeouts, a feat not accomplished in the Midsummer Classic since Pedro Martínez in 1999.
While he allowed a solo home run to former Dodgers teammate Miguel Vargas, Wrobleski’s ability to command the zone and generate high-leverage swings and misses highlighted his rapid evolution. His performance tied the franchise record for most strikeouts in an All-Star Game, matching legends Fernando Valenzuela and Don Drysdale.
From Minor League Depth to ‘The Shark’
Wrobleski’s ascent represents one of the most compelling underdog stories of the 2026 season. Just last year, the former 11th-round draft pick was in the minor leagues, working to overhaul his pitching arsenal. After a transition to the bullpen and a stint in the World Series, he entered this season with uncertainty regarding his role. Since seizing a rotation spot early in the year, he has posted a 10-2 record with a 2.69 ERA, ranking among the National League’s elite.
Known by the nickname “The Shark”—a moniker bestowed upon him by Hall of Famer Pedro Martínez—Wrobleski has embraced the label, even sporting an embroidered shark on his custom All-Star jacket. His development as a strikeout pitcher has been the missing piece in his game; after recording only 53 strikeouts in his first 86 ⅓ innings, his recent adjustments to his fastball and secondary pitches have transformed him into a legitimate force on the mound.
Looking Ahead
Reflecting on his journey from college uncertainty and Tommy John surgery to the All-Star stage, Wrobleski remains focused on the second half of the campaign. “I’ve been kind of learning and continuing to grow and figure out how to strike guys out,” he said. With his newfound confidence and validated status as a top-tier pitcher, the challenge for Wrobleski will be maintaining this performance as the Dodgers push toward the postseason.
