Duncan Sheik, the Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter known for his 1990s pop hit “Barely Breathing” and the Tony-winning composer behind the musical “Spring Awakening,” has died at the age of 56. His family confirmed on Friday that Sheik passed away Thursday, surrounded by loved ones, according to the Spokesman. While family members had initially reported on Wednesday that the musician was in critical but stable condition, his mother, Suzanne Sheik, later confirmed to the New York Times that the cause of death was organ failure resulting from cardiac arrest.
Sheik’s career spanned decades, moving from the pop charts of the mid-90s to the prestigious stages of Broadway. Born in New Jersey and an alumnus of Brown University, he first gained national attention with his 1996 self-titled debut album. The lead single, “Barely Breathing,” became an anthem of the era’s coffee-shop rock scene, remaining on the Billboard Hot 100 for more than a year and earning him a Grammy nomination for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.
Transition to Broadway Success
Despite his early pop success, Sheik’s artistic trajectory shifted significantly when he began collaborating with playwright Steven Sater in 1999. Their partnership produced “Spring Awakening,” a musical based on Frank Wedekind’s 19th-century German play. The production, which explored themes of youth, sexuality, and societal repression, became a cultural touchstone. It premiered on Broadway in 2007, winning eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Sheik personally received Tonys for Best Orchestrations and Best Original Score.
Sheik continued to bridge the gap between alternative pop and theatrical composition throughout his career. His later credits included the musical adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ “American Psycho,” the “Alice in Wonderland” retelling “Alice by Heart,” and various other projects including “Noir” and “The Secret Life of Bees.” His final studio album, “Claptrap,” was released in 2022.

The news of Sheik’s passing comes as the theater community prepares for a new off-Broadway revival of “Spring Awakening,” which is scheduled to begin previews at Studio Seaview in New York on November 27. Additionally, Sheik had been working on “Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen,” a new musical inspired by the manga series by Moyoco Anno, as reported by USA TODAY.
In a statement posted to his Instagram account, his family expressed their grief, noting that the world had lost a “singular talent” and a “deeply influential voice.” Sheik is remembered by those close to him for his intelligence, wit, and profound spirit. Throughout his career, he remained active in both the studio and the theater, even after seeking treatment for personal struggles, including alcohol addiction, in 2011.
