Quick Read

  • The ECB launched the Pontes settlement platform on September 21.
  • Pontes enables central bank money settlement for tokenized securities.
  • Axiology, one of the four launch operators, uses XRPL open-source code.
  • The ECB is using Pontes to purchase assets from its own €23.1B portfolio.

The European Central Bank (ECB) officially launched its Pontes settlement system on September 21, marking a significant step in integrating tokenized securities into the Eurosystem’s core financial infrastructure, according to Yahoo Finance. The platform bridges the gap between private distributed ledger technology (DLT) networks and institutional cash settlement, allowing transactions to be finalized using central bank money.

Bridging Private Ledgers and Central Bank Infrastructure

Pontes addresses a persistent hurdle in the adoption of tokenized assets: the need for a reliable, regulatory-compliant way to settle the cash component of trades. By linking participating DLT platforms to the Eurosystem’s TARGET Services, the ECB enables instant delivery-versus-payment, where the asset and the corresponding cash payment are exchanged simultaneously.

At launch, the system connects four DLT operators: Axiology, Cashlink, Clearstream, and SWIAT. These operators serve as the entry points for 13 initial market participants, including major institutions such as Deutsche Bank, Santander, Société Générale, and the European Investment Bank.

The Role of XRPL Technology

Among the DLT operators, the Lithuanian firm Axiology has drawn attention for its technical foundation. According to an ECB report on previous DLT experiments, Axiology’s infrastructure is built using the open-source code of the XRP Ledger (XRPL). While the platform utilizes this technology to support trading, settlement, and holding of tokenized securities, it operates as a private, permissioned system. The ECB confirmed that Pontes does not utilize the public XRP cryptocurrency for settlement purposes.

Institutional Adoption and Future Outlook

The system is already seeing practical application. Altcoin Buzz reports that the ECB has begun preparations to purchase tokenized assets from its €23.1 billion own-funds portfolio, utilizing the Pontes rail for settlement. This move underscores the ECB’s intent to move beyond experimental phases and incorporate tokenized assets into its own balance sheet management. As the system scales, the ECB’s ability to facilitate secure, DLT-based settlements is expected to influence how European financial institutions manage liquidity and asset trading in the coming years.
