Evaluating Heavy Metals and PFAS in Formula Brands
The results, released in early May 2026, showed that the overwhelming majority of retail samples contained undetectable or very low levels of contaminants. Specifically, the agency looked for glyphosate and glufosinate pesticides, alongside per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). FDA Commissioner Marty Makary emphasized that the data supports the overall safety of the supply while reinforcing the necessity of reducing newborn exposure to even low-level contaminants. Parallel to the safety crackdown, federal and state officials are moving to lower barriers for families accessing these products. In early May, CVS Pharmacy announced that all 56 of its locations in Rhode Island have begun accepting Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) benefits for infant formula. This expansion addresses a critical leg of the Operation Stork Speed mission: ensuring that high-quality, tested formula is accessible to low-income families. Deputy Commissioner for Food Kyle Diamantas noted that the FDA will continue testing products that entered the market after the initial survey, with a high-level roundtable discussion on formula oversight scheduled for later this month.
